Wedding Wednesday

We have talked about how we all have desires for our relationship when we get married. To buy a house. To get good jobs. To have babies. To go on vacations. But sometime after we get married these desires shift to expectations. It may be right after you say "I Do" or it could be weeks, months, years later but it happens.

We talked about how God commanded us to love our spouse and put their hopes, dreams, and desires ahead of our own. So what about OUR desires? Who should we give those to if not to our spouse? 1 Peter 5:6-7 says: "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

God wants to know about our desires, needs, dreams, hopes, and wishes. He cares for you. And me. Even the littlest thing that may seem so insignificate matters to Him. God designed us that way. Our spouses were not meant to take on that load. It is unhealthy to put that type of pressure on a spouse.

I cannot imagine if I put the pressure on Garth to fulfill my every hope, wish, desire, and dream. Our marriage would just not be good. I do not look to Garth for happiness. I look to God. He is listening and waiting on me to talk to Him. To learn more about Him. And I try to live my life where I am constantly in communication with Him. I cannot expect Garth to fulfill me and give me strength. That is God's job and Garth knows that and feels the same way. Garth does not look to me for ultimate fulfillment and happiness. It is unrealistic and we would just constantly be letting each other down if we looked to each other for what only God can provide.

"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:28-31.

Lovely post and as someone who is recently married, just experienced a major move, and is now looking for a job, it can be easy to fall into this pattern.

Good advice!
