Greatest Compliment

I’m reading an old issue of Real Simple (am I ever caught up?!) and the reader question was “What is the greatest compliment you ever received?”

I remember it clearly. Garth and I had been dating about six months at the time and Garth’s roommate had started dating a new girl. We were all sitting around the kitchen table playing cards like we always did and I asked how things were going with his new girlfriend. He responded, “She is fun, but we don’t have what you and Garth have.”

That always stuck with me. I loved that other people noticed that what Garth and I have is special. We aren’t perfect. We fight. We disagree. We hurt each other. But we love each other. We defend each other. We cherish quality time together. We laugh together. Tell secrets. Share inside jokes. We were made for each other. He is the peanut butter to my jelly. The cheese to my wine. I firmly believe it was all part of God’s grand design for us to meet, date, and marry and I can't imagine life without that boy. He is my best friend. My lover. My confidant. My biggest fan. And what we have is not easily broken. It’s the ‘til death do us part kind.

It's something special.
