The Dream House...with a catch.

I know it's been forever since I shared a house I've been loving, but if I could just be blatantly honest with you we're scared to death to buy a house. The biggest question plaguing us right now is - Do we want to stay in Michigan for the next five (or even ten) years? And the answer is: we have no freaking clue. We are just feeling really lost and unsure of where we are going (job and geography wise) so the house hunting has been put on hold...UNTIL we stumbled upon this 1917 gem of a house:
The kitchen:

You had me at hello:
Just gorgeous:
Jetted tub, yes please!
Gotta love a HUGE master bedroom:
Every house needs a little red in it:

Look at all that space - 3,800 square feet, 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms of space to be exact.
Amazing, right? So what's the catch? It's in Detroit. While I'm always the first to stick up for the city, I just don't want to live and raise a family there. But I'm not gonna lie, this house had me rethinking it.

It's a cute house, but I'm with ya - I don't think I'd want to raise a family in Detroit.

Beautiful house!!! I guess the positive about Detroit is that you'd get a great deal on it right now?

The property taxes in Detroit are CRAZY high and so is their water bills! Just something to consider. Beautiful house though.

That is a fabulous house!

As a new home owner myself (we bought in Nov), I want to encourage you not to feel pressured to buy until you're ready to settle down in one place. Life's too short.

We love our house, but can honestly say that having one comes with a lot of responsibility. We had a pipe explode and ruin three rooms in our house and have spent the last two months dealing with the aftermath. For us, we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel - we love our neighborhood and want to raise our kids in our hosue, but still, it has meant giving up time in a lot of other areas like friends and family to deal with the mess that it caused.

SO, a word from the wise, and a "been there, done that two months ago" statement... don't buy until you're feeling ready to be tied down.

It is a super cute house!

Oh.My.Goodness. That is a GORGEOUS house! Though, I can definitely understand not wanting to raise kids in the city. It would be hard to pass up a house like that.

That house is huge, but I know what you mean about the location. You two are settled in your apartment right now and still have time. I know what a big commitment buying a house is and that the answers will come to you soon. You will find that dream house!

Wow, I can see the dilema...it's a beautiful home! I could totally see myself living there! Hubs and I are sort of feeling the same way about the future. We know we want to stay around the general area but location is proving to be a tough one. We are moving into a new home this month but really it's only a temporary holding for a few years until we figure out where we want to be. It's really only got room for one kid as it can either be a two bedroom one bath or a one bedroom-one office kind of deal. *sigh* so many decisions to be made!

FUN house!! Very, very cute :) I bet there is an even BETTER dream house out there though in a dream location with yalls name on it!

Oh.Wow. I love that house! Location is everything though...if you aren't sure you want to be in Detroit, then I probably would hold off.

I didn't realize you were from my old stomping grounds! We moved out of Wyandotte (10 minutes south of Detroit) in 2006 and feel we got out just in time. The house we sold has depreciated so much in just the last 4 years it is now worth HALF what we sold it for - I feel so sorry for the girl who bought it from us!
That is a beautiful house but you are right to be scared. I'd be scared to buy a house anywhere right now, but Detroit is the scariest place of all!
Where is your apt now???

Great house! WOW.

But take it from me... there's no need to rush and settle down and buy a house until you really know that the place for you and your future family.

We bought a condo almost 2 yrs ago but now we're tied to this area -- I look back now and feel like I was too young to tie myself down!

I don't know much about Detroit but that house is fab!

Sooooo cute! But none of that matters when you're murdered in your sleep there :-) JK - mostly. Keep looking - you'll find your dream house!

Wow, it's huge!!! But yeah... probably not worth it for the neighborhood although there are some up and coming artsy parts that are pretty nice....

wow. amazing house. i've never been to detroit, but have heard it's not the place to raise kids in... boo.

It's very cute. Don't worry the right place will come around.

what beautiful home but if something doesn't sit right like the area I'd pass. You can change a lot about a house but you can't change it's location. BTW I can totally relate to being terrified to buy a house. But I think when you find the perfect place you'll just know. I had an indescribable peace throughout our paperwork process with the house we chose and I know you'll find something just perfect as well

Lauren said...

Wow, that house is gorgeous...of course, Detroit may be the reason it's on the market in the first place. Goood luck! I know you'll find a place that is perfect for you at the perfect time!

d.a.r. said...

Oooh it's gorgie!!! But, yeah, you are right. Unless you are dead set on an area, buying a house is bad news bears! Especially in an unstable market like Detroit!

Too bad its in Detroit, its beautiful!

Erin said...

I don't have anything of substance to add (since I know nothing about the pros or cons of living in detroit) except to say that is such a cool house!

Ah, Farmington! Are you in the downtown area? I used to live in the apt at the corner of nine mile and Drake, can't remember the name of the complex but they were really nice. Love that area! There's that great Thai food place that used to be out that way, not sure if it still is or not.
Now if you could find a house in your price range in Farmington, I might get on board with you on that one!

ahhh what a beautiful house.... love it.. but you will find one in the right spot...

Lindsay - seriously, we need to email. i have some dear friends who live in indian village and have a great church in detroit - committed to serving those in the community. jeff and i hope to get back to detroit within the next year-and-a-half or so... i am so convicted about LIVING IN THE CITY - amongst the poor. let's chat about this (even though we hardly know each other :) ) xoxo

LC said...

by the way - everyone that posts about NOT living in the detroit.. Jesus demonstrated 'downward mobility' to us by coming to earth. we should totally follow suit - just because we may have the money for white suburbia doesn't mean we should live there. God will keep you safe in detroit if that's where he has called you to be, I promise.... follow His lead :)

That house is gorgeous! When we were looking, I kept finding amazing homes in areas that we didn't want to live in. It took over a year to find a home that we loved in an area we loved! Good luck!

What a gorgeous house. Too bad it's in the wrong location. You'll find the perfect home though, just stay positive!

Wow that house is fantastic! But I too hear you on the worries about living in Detroit. God'll give you the wisdom you need to make the right decision. =)

Lovely blog! Saw you commented on Anne's blog and stopped by =)

My sister bought a house not thinking about what you are thinking about now and she regrets it at the moment. She now lives in a different city than said house and has to rent it out. And her rent is not fully meeting her mortgage so she has to pay the rent in new city plus the remainder of her mortgage.
(She held onto the house because she has not owned it for five years and the market took a major hit less than a year after she bought it!)

holy, moly! what part of the city?! I can't believe it! It looks SO nice! I work downtown and drive through the city everyday and I love the old houses! Sadly the raising a family there is definitely a big issue. One day hopefully :)

GORGEOUS!!!

I'm a southern, warm-weather girl myself, so I'll refrain from weighing in on the location :)
