Did He or Didn't He?

Next month Garth and I are celebrating our three year anniversary. It's crazy how time flies when you're having fun! It got me thinking about our engagement and all the engagements going on this time of year...
Before Garth asked me to marry him, he asked my dad for his blessing. So I wanna know, did your guy ask for your dad's blessing/permission?

I had kind of a strange situation. I was 18 years old, a senior in high school when he proposed. My dad lived 5 states away and still felt I was a child - too young to get married. My husband knew how he felt so I almost think he was too chicken to ask. He knew he would get the "Why don't you wait until she finishes college."
My dad did however come to our wedding that fall and wear the only tuxedo he has ever worn. He never complained once about it but apparently from what I have been told, he hated it.
It is very special to me that he did walk me down the isle, well, I should say I pulled him down the isle. And gave me away. He passed away 4 years and one day later. I am glad I could have him be there even though he has and will missso much else.

Yes my hubby did. He went over to my parents house and asked for their permission and we were almost 30 years old. :)

Absolutely! I wouldn't have had it any other way either!

My husband didnt... which surprises me - he's very old fashion & respectful... hmmm... I'm going to have to ask him about this now! ;)

My husband did! I actually called my parents over lunchtime and little did I know they were sitting together with him!

I love that Garth did that. My husband didn't... I 19 when we got engaged and I know that my father would have said no! Heck, my dad refused to even acknowledge that I was engaged for a good 4 months! It was really hard on my that my dad wasn't supportive. But, 6 years later, my dad and he are very close, so, it all worked out :)

My husband didn't and stil brings it up that maybe he should have, I keep telling him not to worry we were both in our 30s. Plus the first question out of my dad's mouth when I told him was "what about our Alaksan cruise?"

Oh indeed he did. From both my dad and my stepdad.

Yes. Geof asked my mom and my dad. My mom said she had to keep the secret for a few months. I don't know how she did it. I thought it was really sweet that Geof talked to them before asking me to marry him.

I can't believe you and Garth are about to celebrate 3 years!

My husband asked my dad's blessing, about an hour before he asked me to marry him! He was deploying 3 days later, so we were in a bit of a time crunch

Yep, my husband did! He knew it was a requirement by me! ha!

My dad passed away 4 years before we got married so he didn't get to ask him but he did ask my "foster" parents for their blessing.

Sure did! I would have it no other way!

Right after he proposed and I said yes, the second thing out of my mouth was, "Did you ask my dad about this?!" I guess I'm pretty traditional and was so glad to hear his answer was yes!

I have announced the book I will be using for my book club...come over to visit my blog to sign up for it! :-)

Yes, he did ask before and I just LOVE that he did :)

My Dad's a pretty liberal guy -- so he know he shouldn't ask him, but he did want his blessing beforehand. So the Mr. got him alone and said, "I think I am going to ask K to marry me. What do you think." :)
I was so glad he talked to my Dad before he proposed!

My hubby asked my mom on Christmas morning before he suprised me at midnight on Christmas.

Yes! He knew that this was important to me...and to my dad. I had been engaged once before (I broke the engagement off before we ever headed down the aisle), but he didn't ask my dad, which bothered me and definitely didn't sit well with my dad.

Yep. Funny story though: My dad was umpiring little league baseball at the time (for fun) and he got hit in the throat with a baseball. He couldn't talk for weeks, so Joey had to hold off on asking b/c he wanted my dad to actually be able to speak. LOL. He thought it would be too easy if he asked and my dad couldn't reply. LOL.

Yes, my hubby asked my parents for their blessing...poor guy was so nervous that my parents thought he was there to tell them he wanted to break up with me! hahaha.

My husband most definitely did! I had previously told him that it was important to me! He sucked it up and met with my parents and had a two-hour visit with them all without my knowledge!

Yessum he did! Well... he asked 3 times, in fact. My dad kept saying "Just wait." Not sure what he thought we needed to wait for, but he infally said yes (after seeing how seriously Studly was). *sigh OOOh the memories...

Absolutely! That is something I have always said I wanted him to do. It's just right. It's funny though because after he told my dad, he asked him to not tell my mom. He wanted her to be surprised with me! it was cute! I loved seeing her face and hearing her scream when I came in flashing my ring!

My husband just told my dad that he was going to propose. He didn't ask, because, well he and my dad didn't have a great relationship. Who knows what my dad would have said if he had asked permission! Obviously, my dad took it well. =)

USCEmily said...

Yes, WEG did ask my dad. He got the ring, asked my dad, and asked me all in the same day. After I said yes, I asked him to make sure, even though I knew he had. Not because my dad told me, but because I knew that he wouldn't do it without asking. We're both very traditional Southerners and know the importance!

Mrs. Yellow Ribbon said...

ABSOLUTELY! It's the only way to go ;-)They talked in November and we got engaged in December. My dad was super surprised when we announced our engagement. For some reason, he though it wasn't going to happen for a LONG while...even after "the talk".

Yes! He asked my dad when we went to visit my great grandma for mothers day three years ago. He popped the question the next day. It was so sneaky!

3 years?! wow. and hubs did ask my dad for permission. that was really important to me, so i'm glad it was important to him too.

Congrats on 3 years!! Yes, Micah asked my mom her permission since my dad passed away. I had no idea that he had even talked to her, so immediately after Micah proposed, I called home and she admitted that he called and talked to her a few months prior about proposing to me. I think it's a sweet gesture.

Nope, he didn't!

Josh asked my dad not long after we started dating if he could pursue things with me and was given my dad's blessing. He didn't ask again before he proposed though. =)

yep, my hubby went to my parents house and talked to them both about it!! he said he had never been so nervous in his life! haha :) so sweet!

Tammy said...

absolutely! funny thing about it though. he made me go with him! it was no secret he was gonna ask me to marry him, i just didn't know when. he's super shy and was freaking out about talking to my dad, so we went to my parents house together. i pretended to not know what was going on and me and my mom stayed in the kitchen while he went to talk to my dad. it was pretty funny!

my guy and I have been together for quite a while and sadly, my father passed in October, but before he left us, he gave my guy his blessing.

My husband asked both of my parents and my younger sister. I didn't want my sister to feel left out.
