Advice Needed.

Garth and I love trying new food and we really want to try Indian food. I love curry and rice so I think I would enjoy it. BUT I hate spicy food. Even a little bit of spice ruins the flavor of a meal for me. Case in point - at Thai restaurants I order my tofu pad thai "no spice." Since I despise all things spicy, is there hope for me at an Indian restaurant? I would greatly appreciate any input because I really want to go try this new place by us, but I am so scared everything will be too hot for me. THANKS!!=)

I hate spicy too! All the indian food I've had is super spicy! I can only eat the nan (bread) and the yoghurt dip. Sad. Good luck if you try it!

Oh Yes, anything in the tandoori. I adore Wangchuk chicken and Rashmi Kebab.

It isn't hot spicy at all, it's mostly ginger and garlic.

And while Tandoori chicken is bright red that's only due to food dye, it's actually a nice simple flavor that I adore.

There's actually a lot there that isn't spicy at all (just avoid anything called Vindaloo).

If you want any other ideas I have a few spices that I cook with that I adore.

Sorry honey! as much as I love spicy, I hate Indian food! And Thai food. I'm not a fan of curry. That might explain it. good luck!

The few times I've eaten Indian I haven't had anything spicy. I think the post above me recommends some of the things I've had.
You could also ask your server what is spicy & what isn't.

I'm in the same boat as you. When we go to Indian I just order rice and bring little soy sauce packets from home...
Samosas are usually pretty good though, not spicy, kinda like the Indian version of a fried wonton

There are definitely some foods you can order that are not spicy! I have acid reflux really bad so I'm limited on how much spice I can have and the Indian Restaurants I have been to, I've always been able to find something other than rice to eat. :) Like someone else stated above, stay away from anything that says Vindaloo! That is really spicy!

Oh my...you would probably never be able to eat any of my cooking! I love spicy food!

I definitely think you can find some non-spicey Indian food. I've had some dishes that were hot and some that were totally mild.

I love Indian food, but I have to say most of what I've had hasn't been too spicy...but that's my tastebuds. Perhaps they'll let you order without the spice like the Thai restaurant?

:-/ Sorry, don't think I can help you - The only somewhat spicy stuff I eat is Mild Hot Sauce so I don't think that counts... Never tried Indian food..

I do not do spicy either- but what might save you is that there are different kinds of spicy. You know? like cinnamon spicy, Mexican pepper spicy, cracked pepper spicy (my nemesis), curry spicy and so on- perhaps you will like curry spicy?

I think your best bet is just to ask the server at the restaurant that you go to because in my experience it varies so much from one place to the next...I LOVE spicy food, and always ask for my food to come that way when I go to ethnic restaurants and I can never it it spicy enough! (I don't think my servers every believe that I can handle it...). I think most ethnic restaurants understand that they are going to have clients that don't care for spicy food, so I'm sure you wont have a problem finding something to enjoy.

I LOVE Indian food...there are several options that aren't spicy. If you get your dish and it's too spicy, just put on some of the yogurt sauce...it'll cool it down! :) Good luck! Let us know what you try!

I wouldn't be much help as I love spicy foods and I think Indian food is wonderful!!! It's really not that spicy though, in my opinion!

Ohhhhh....you NEED to go get Indian food! My eats everything with ketchup husband LOVES Indian and can eat it without ketchup!

I have zero, zero, absolutely zero tolerance for heat and spicy foods. I love chicken tikka masala and palak paneer for these exact reasons. There's SO many options in Indian restaurants that don't involve a lot of heat! Go for it and be sure to order a side of garlic naan and a mango lassi!

I am of no help because I loooove spicy. There are some things in Indian resturants that I wouldn't label as "spicy" however... tandoori chicken isn't "spicy" to me--it has flavor, but, isn't spicy--most of their veggie dishes, anything with spinach is usually a safe bet--but, I don't want to steer you wrong!

Hi, I clicked over from someone's blog...
I LOVE LOVE INDIAN food! It is my favorite, however, I can NOT stand spicy food.
Chicken Korma
Butter Chicken
ANd Tandori are all delish and not spicy.
Not every Indian place has butter chicken, but just ask if they have something similiar. PS. it is not really just butter- I don't know why they call it that! :)

We always get the boys chicken tikka masala because its not spicy. (Not at the restaurant we go to anyway.)

Do you like peanut butter sauce? Hear me out- there is a dish called Pad Thai that I fricken ADORE and it is basically just noodles in a peanut butter sauce. It can be made spicy or not spicy, and I hate spicy food so I always get it non spicy. It is the fricken BOMB. They serve it here in St. Louis at all the Indian or Thai or Vietnamese restaurants. Try it, you'll like it!

oh I don't know! it's been so long since we've had Indian (my Mom loves it! =)). If I find anything out from her, I'll come back and let you know=)! Good luck and let us know what you try!

I'm not a spicy food fan either- In fact, I had a terrifying experience at Don Pablo's once with salsa that nearly sent my mouth into flames! So I'm no help with the restaurant advice. I'd stay clear away if it were me!

PS- go take a peek at my blog for a little surprise I left you :)

We LOVE indian food - the UK eats a lot of it! I hope you enjoy it...

My tips for non-spicy dishes are

pasandas and kormas (cream based sauces with no heat at all) or butter chicken.

I don't do ANY spice! ick! I LOVE pad thai and pretty much get it at every Indian place! There is only one place here that I didn't like it.

I love spicy food so I'm not sure I'll be the best advice giver here but my two personal Indian faves are Chicken Saag and Tandoori Chicken. Most Indian places have you pick your spice level by number- just say 0 and see how it goes!

Anything cooked in the tandoori should be fine for you. I think you might really like chicken tikka masala. It is marinated in a yogurt sauce to make it super tender and the masala sauce is red and almost like a marinara, but it tastes so much better.

If you try it, you will have to let us know.
