A Disconnect.

Garth and I joke that we not only have male/female differences, but we also have cultural differences. Garth grew up in South Africa and didn't come to America until he was 14 and I have lived in Michigan all. my. life.

I forget he lived in a different country until things like this happen:

Me: I heard a really funny joke today that made me literally laugh out loud. Are you ready?
Garth: Yes.
Me: While driving yesterday I saw a banana peel in the road and instinctively swerved to avoid it...thanks Mario Kart.
Garth: What's a Mario Kart?

LOL You must've read the same list that I did! :) But, it's funny that he has no clue about Mario Kart! You must fix that!

He's lived here since he was 14 and he still doesn't know what Mario Kart is??? Haha! Well, I guess I didn't know what Mario Kart was until I went to college...

Ha ha ha. Though it's easy to forget sometimes that even when two people come from different states there can be local jokes or inside references that the other person just doesn't get.

Crazy how intrinsic people are sometimes.

That's funny! Did you immediately run out and rent Mario Kart so he could be initiated?? I sure hope so!!

AHHH! OMG! I HAVE to share this story with my boyfriend...he would def. appreciate your reference to Mario Kart. Hysterical! You must teach your boyfriend all about it...it is def. our favorite game (borderline obsessed with the WII version!)

My husband grew up in Hong Kong, and among other things, has never seen The Brady Bunch. It keeps things interesting!

That is too funny!

It reminds me of my mom and dad b/c my mom grew up in South America until her sophomore year of high school...so my dad will talk about songs/movies/shows from their childhood and she's like "I have no clue what you're talking about!"

Oh my gosh!!! That is too funny. :) You definitely need to introduce Garth to the wonders of Mario Kart. But then again, you may lose your husband for some time if you do that! :)

Oh my goodness!
It your duty as a good wife to open your dear husband's eyes and fingertips to Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart..I can't believe they don't have that question on the citzenship test..Mario Bros. should be mandatory! : )

If you don't have a wii, get one. THEN, buy Mario Kart for the wii with the steering wheels. He needs to know things.

Girl Meets Beau said...

How funny! I guess I assumed everyone knew what Mario Kart was HA! You should buy the old school game and teach him all about it :)

Lol...that's funny! Yeah..these are the little things that bring excitement to a marriage when you're discovering each other and realize that culture plays a big part. Even though we're both hispanic, I was born in Costa Rica and my hubby was born in San Diego but he's Mexican and we do alot of things differently. Even our spanish is different but it makes things exciting because we learn form each other!

Megan said...

OK, that made me laugh out loud! HA!

So funny! I had to pass that joke on to my hubby-- we're always playing Mario Kart together!

Taryn said...

serious? Since he was 14, he has never heard of mario kart?

I grew up without any video games- and honestly I feel like I am missing out on a life skill of our generation. But thanks to wii- I don't look like a total dork turning my controller to drive my little car.

Christina said...

That's funny! My sisters boyfriend is from South Africa as well. I'll have to tell him the story and see if he's figured out what Mario Kart is! :)

CJ said...

Ha ha! Me and hubs are from same country, same state but different regions and with different accents. Some words I use sound totally alien to him. And in middle of a conversation I have to pause and explain him what it means..grin!

I think it's so cool that your husband is from South Africa. Have you ever been or are you planning to visit South Africa in the future? That would be an incredible place to see!

Have a great week sweet friend!
