The No Take-Out Challenge.

It's no secret I don't cook in our household. Garth enjoys it so he does it. I enjoy cleaning so I do it. Makes perfect sense, right? But lately Garth's classes have been demanding and taking up so much of his time that he doesn't have time to cook. Thus, resulting in picking up take-out way too often.
In an attempt to get Garth and I eating healthier we went to Costco last night and shopped until we dropped. I am so proud of Garth, he VOLUNTARILY picked out veggie burgers AND he agreed to try turkey sausage!! Call it compromise, but he also picked out a 15 pound bag of chicken wings. We also bought veggies, fruit, Skinny Cow ice cream cones, egg white quiches, whole grain spaghetti & sauce, cereal, etc. For the first time in our married life, our fridge and freezer are full - I am so proud of us!
Garth and I agreed (and shook on it!) that we would not order take-out until our fridge and freezer were empty. Let the challenge begin!!

FUN!! I didn't know I liked to cook until I tried it I always just assumed I'd hate it. It's an adventure to come up with meals now. Anyway one thing I learned was if a recipe is made to feed 4 make the whole recipe and then freeze half of it. Then on days you don't really feel like cooking you can just take one of your freezer meals out and heat it up.

Haha! I always think I like to cook and always have a stocked fridge...then I start cooking, get impatient and mess it up...Good luck love!

Good luck with this! I actually really enjoy cooking but we are always hoping to stay in so we can save money!

We try to do the same thing around here too! It's harder for us during the summer because we are both off but it's worth the it. Especially when we stopped to calculate how much money we spent on eating out! Good luck!

Good Luck, we cook a ton at our house. It will save you so much money that you will want to do it all the time!!

Good luck. I don't like to cook either, and I love to eat out. So I take out $20 cash each week that I use for take-out only. When I run out of cash, I can't eat out any more that week. It works really well for me.

I'm similar in that I'm trying to empty what we've got in the fridge, freezer, and cupboards before buying more. Good luck with the challenge- it's a great one for your health and your wallet!

Congrats on the weight loss! It sounds like you'll be able to drop the remaining pounds with what's filling your fridge and freezer. I love Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches-only 150 calories!

You night not believe this- but I used to hate cooking too. HATE it. I liked to bake goodies (because who doesn't like a nice warm cookie right out of the oven?) but cooking meals- no way. Now look at me! Maybe you will discover your hidden passion for cooking too.

Good luck on your endeavor.

You go -- This sounds SO MUCH like Mr. R and I -- I'm always "picking something up" because he's home late or really tired from work --

Good luck! We'd starve :)

This is a great idea! My husband and I need to try this. We go out to eat way too much!

Wow - I'll be quite impressed to see how that works for you. We have days where we just feel like being lazy or are too stinking busy to cook, so we eat out... or we just go out on a date for heck of it.

BUT I've been really impressing myself with how much I've been cooking lately. Go us... and Go YOU guys!!

Good luck! We made a pact not to eat out for the whole month of July. We are halfway through and have stayed true. It's tough, but worth it. We are having so much fun cooking together and spending time in our home where we can actually talk rather than a loud restaurant.

Good luck with your challenge! I laughed out loud when I read "15 pounds of chicken wings!" Too funny!

Good for you!!!!! I enjoy cooking with my boyfriend much more than going out to eat. It makes life easier when we clean up the kitchen together too, plus it saves time! and it's a great way to have more quality time together :)

Andrew and I stocked up at Sam's over two months ago and we still have stuff left we are using. We very rarely eat out, but when we do it's a treat!

Good luck on your challenge. ;) I'm curious to know how long it takes you guys to eat that 15 pounds of chicken wings. ha! ;)

That is a great challenge! Your grocery list sounds almost identical to ours ;)

Great challenge! We try to plan out all of our meals for the week and buy those groceries so we aren't tempted to eat out.

Oh wow! Good luck! I am the only one who cooks, and I love it, but sometimes I just don't feel like it. Which means we eat out b/c Jon does NOT cook. Haha!! Let us know how it goes! :)

Awesome :) you can do it! My hubby and I have found cooking together has been so much fun -- we love trying new, healthy things!! I look forward to hearing how things go :)

I cannot emphasize enough the importance f eating right my friend and I'm very proud of you guys for taking on this challege. We don't eat out much..I've never been too crazy about fast food...don't get me wrong it is very convenient and can be very delicious but I tend to feel guilty while I eat it or bad when I'm done. There's nothing like a home cooked meal my friend....you guys will love it so much you won't be trying to hit the nearest Wendy's for a while. Besides..it's alot easier on the pocket too. I think you guys can do this..sounds like you're set for a while. I will be cheering you on YEAH!!!!!

It all sounds good, but what about a HUGE BOX of good cereal? That's my favorite summer dinner - nothing could be easier! :)

For me, it's not that I hate to cook. It's more like I can't cook, haha.

Cristina said...

Good for you! It will take some getting used to but by the end you'll see that cooking is way better than take out, your wallet will thank you :)

PS - I was following you before using a different account, I changed my URL address and am following again, come check out my new page!

Way to go. This is one of our biggest challenges too. It really really helps to have pre-made, quick meals in the freezer so you always have something for dinner.

Great idea and this is something that we desperately need to do as well. With my work being so crazy lately and Geof's travel schedule, we have been eating out a lot. Not good on the wallet or the waistline! We have a BJ’s membership and really need to go on a big shopping trip.
