Steak and Potatoes

I work late most week nights and Garth has class so the nights we do get to eat together are sacred. Garth does most of the cooking and I do all the cleaning and laundry. But on the rare occasion I feel inspired to cook, and that night happened to be last Wednesday.
My man loves his steak and potatoes so that is what I tried to make. I checked on my baked potatoes and they had shrunk in and were hard as rock. I still don't know how I messed up baked potato, but I did. So I quickly sliced and diced some potatoes and threw them in the oven and we had fries.
My steak was really cooking too fast which set my smoke detector off. The oven and stove were really getting hot and I was starting to sweat. Garth came in just in the nick of time and saved the steak so we had a great meal. I was stressed out and poured a big glass of wine.
I think I'll stick to cleaning up after meals. Cooking is way to stressful.

Aww sorry you had a terrible cooking experience, I love to cook but I have come a long way from the days I could barley even boil water practice makes perfect!

Awe, sweet friend! Sorry that happened. That is definitely why I stick to very simple meals, because I am not the best cook! But it still sounds like you tried and the meal did turn out well! Don't give up ;)

I know how you feel - you have the best of intentions but it can be hard work and it doesn't always turn out like you hoped it would. I'm sure Garth was very appreciative of your efforts. And a big glass of wine cures everything. :)

ha! I've been there. It can get better. :) I love that Garth cooks for you. My dad was the cook in our family growing up and I love it.

I hate when that stuff just randomly happens. Especially when things catch on fire (beer chicken I'm looking at you).

But an easy answer to baked potatoes is to just use the microwave. Poke them a few times and pop them in there for a few minutes. Comes out perfect.

Awe...it's the thought that counts! =)

Stuff like that happens all the time to me.

I can totally relate! I am no good at cooking cause no one taught me. My hubs on the other hand and his mother are AMAZING cooks. She taught him well so he does most of the cooking. It's awesome to have hubs who cook isn't it?

I love potatoes so much that I'll eat them as hard as rocks;) Kind of like a photo chip! Lol...So sorry your cooking night didn't go as planned, but it really does get better with practice:)

Steak can be tough to get right, so don't give up- especially if you enjoy cooking! If you don't enjoy it, then yay for a husband who does! Plus, cleaning probably burns more calories anyways! :)

Aww, it's the thought that counts! I'm not sure what happened to the potatoes, that's impressive! ;)

I'm so with you on this one. I'm just terrible at cooking. I think maybe I get to stressed with it being perfect and end over doing it. Ugh.

Oh no! Well, it's the thought that counts, right? You're lucky to have a husband who will do all the cooking for you. I'm glad the steaks were salvaged.

My husband is a much better cook then I, but I'm the better baker. But hey, at least you got to relax with a glass of wine right!

Whenever we broil anything, our fire alarm goes off. We've learned to keep a stool just below it so we can turn it off right away.

It's moments like those that Husby and I remember most :) I'm sure the rest of your evening with Garth was fabulous.

Thank goodness Garth saved the day...haha! I think it is a perfect balance if he continues to cook and you clean and do laundry. I think Geof is a much better cook than me too.

awww poor thing. Glad it still turned out OK. This is why I married a chef! He does the cooking,I do the clean-up and some occasional baking, and we call it even!

Aww, but you tried!! I cannot for the life of me make pancakes. Cannot do it. I burn them every time. My husband on the other hand totally rocks at pancakes. Of course, he hasn't made them for us in like 3 years, but, that first year of marriage man, we had pancakes every Saturday... Sigh... life gets in the way sometimes, man!

I have something you might want to try. It's called a microwave potato bag.
All you do it wash the potatoes, put them in the bag and microwave. The potatoes come out perfectly fluffy every single time.
We have a foreman grill as well. The potatoes take about seven minutes, the steak takes about ten minutes. Add a quick salad and you have a really nice dinner in under a half hour.
Good luck. I really enjoy reading about your adventures!

I'm a pretty awful cook myself - but I think it's a practice makes better!

Thanks for the comment on my Teeth and Target post - I'm shocked you didn't mention anything about me including you though!!

I'm sure he appreciated the effort all the same. You can bake potatoes in the microwave, too.
