Wedding Rings

It took ONE DAY for Garth to lose his wedding ring. We were on our plane to Hawaii and Garth's fingers were swelling up and his wedding ring was becoming uncomfortable so he took it off his ring finger and put it on his pinky finger. Then he fell asleep. He woke me up in frantic desperation and I didn't take him seriously. This is what he gets for always playing tricks on me! When I finally realized he wasn't joking around, I freaked out too. I was sure the ring was gone because he had been asleep for hours and there had been a lot of turbulence.

His backpack is underneath him and one pocketwas open. I was sure it wouldn't have fallen into that one open pocket. I mean, could we be that lucky? We were.

After this incident, Garth and I always keep our rings on. We don't take them off to clean, or before bed, or to shower, or cook, or ever. We would lose them.

Even if I wouldn't lose the ring, I would keep it on. I love my ring and find myself gazing at it all. the. time. It's not the biggest diamond you'll ever see, or the most sparkly either, but it's mine. Garth picked it out. He proposed to me with THAT ring. I cherish it and always will. I wear it as a sign of my love to Garth and as a outward expression of my commitment to him. And vice versa.

I have some friends who DON'T wear their rings at all. So here's my question - Do you wear your rings al l the time? If you don't, why?

Oh gosh that would be terrifying!

We wear ours all of the time. I NEVER take mine off for fear of losing it. I am not good with jewelry. My ring is literally the only piece of jewelry I wear (except for my thumb ring.) because I lose everything.

Katy said...

I wear mine all the time. Clay doesn't have his yet.

My dad doesn't have one to wear, because my mom's had to be cut off when she was pregnant with me and her fingers started to swell and they didn't want her to loose circulation. They melted their rings together to fix it, so now my mom has her and my dad's ring instead.

I don't wear mine in the shower...I take it off and put it in a little silver box that Hubs gave me on our wedding day. I'm too scared it would slip off and go down the drain!

I wear my wedding ring all the time. I've never taken it off, and hope I will never have to. If I'm doing really messy manual work I will take off my engagement ring but 90% of the time it's on!

Glad Garth found his ring... it would have been awful to lose it.

I wish I could be like you...and I had every intention to be...but at my work we cannot wear any jewelry! I know some people that have their rings in their pockets and take them on and off as they go in and out of work...but I truly think I would lose it and I don't want to risk it.

So...I don't really wear my ring at all during the week. I'll put it on if I come home from work and then we go out...but other than that...I'm a weekend ring kind of girl.

Like you, I'm always starring at it :) Just because it's from him.

I dont take mine off. Im scared to. I have nightmares about losing it! Im worried that as I get bigger and bigger with this baby, my hands will swell and I will have to take it off. I dont want to!

Jen said...

What a cute post :). We wear ours all the time because if we didn't we'd lose them! My husband does remodeling and when he's doing electrical he takes it off and puts it on a chain around his neck, but that's as close as he gets to taking it off. Mine stay on all the time, no matter what.

My husband almost lost it on our honeymoon too :P. We were scuba diving at about 60ft, and he was playing with his ring for some reason. It came off, and he somehow caught it before it fell to the watery depths. We were both freaking out! haha

Amber said...

We wear ours most of the time, except like yesterday when he was painting. I take mine off to put lotion on but that's about it. I still catch myself staring at my ring; I love it so much. And I love the way JD's ring looks on him... means I get to keep him :-)

Melissa said...

I don't have one (yet), but when I do, I'm sure it will pretty much NEVER come off!!!

Ellen Mint said...

I take mine off when I sleep at night as does my husband. One it keeps the ring safer longer as it's white gold and the less time it is on my hand soaking up oils the longer it stays white and two I do not wear jewerly while sleeping.

I have a deep fear that I'll snag or choke myself somehow and ruin not only the jewelry but also cut myself.

Liz said...

Guy and I always wear them except to shower and sleep. I know a lot of people that don't wear them and I just don't get it! I would feel almost disrespected if my husband didn't wear one.

great blog entry~! i only wear my engagment ring during the day....i take it off when i get home...don't ask me why. I do wear my band all the time.

recently both my rings have become loose and i had an awful dream the other night about them falling off but i did not lose them.

i love this story especially because he found it.

As soon as I get home from work, I take mine off, and it doesn't go back on unless I leave the house...which most days is not until the next morning. I also don't wear at the lake, but I've asked for a cheap band to wear out there.

Adrienne said...

I wear mine all the time! I love it so much! I love that it is the one he picked for me, and proposed to me with, you just can't replace that.

Brandi said...

We always wear ours. My husband never takes his off and I love that. I take mine off just to shower and put lotion on but other than that, that baby is on!!! I have the worst fear of losing it. My hubby said it was the only diamond I get until our 10 year so I better not lose it! Ha

tootie said...

So glad you found the ring!!

I take my rings off before bed, but that's about it.

Yesterday was the first day in a long time that I forgot to wear my rings. I felt "off" all day!!

Lis said...

Love the picture of your hands - so cute!! That is so lucky that he found it!!

I wear mine all the time except when I sleep I have a ring holder on my nightstand. No matter what I eat or what I do - it seems as though my fingers swell when I sleep, so I take it off before bed and put it back on after my morning shower.

Christie said...

I wear my wedding band almost all the time. The only times I really take it off are to put on lotion, when I work out, and when I wash the dishes. When I wash dishes I keep it on a little ring holder by the sink, which kind of makes me nervous, but I'm just sure to be extremely careful. I wear my engagement ring during the day, taking it off at times I take my band off, but take it off at night... it doesn't really stick out that much, but the edges are kind of sharp and, silly as it may be, I'm afraid of cutting my sheets, myself, or my Hubby!

That's What She Said said...

I wear my ring all the time, unless I am cutting raw chicken or something gross like that. My fiance does not have a ring yet, but for his sake, he better wear that ring all the time. He doesn't cook or clean, so no excuses.

Kelly said...

I'm the same way. I wear mine all the time. I sometimes take it off to shower but that's it. My husband takes his off to shower and when he uses weights but both these things are in our home so the ring has a special spot it goes in the jewelry box. I also find myself looking at mine all the time. I just love it and what it means. I love that he picked it out and all the memories that surround it. My sister hits me every time she catches me! lol!

5th Belle Avenue said...

Haha, well you probably already know the answer to this one! I USED to take mine off if I was cutting up onions or something smelly. But after my incident last month, I KEEP THESE BABIES ON!! I 100% understand this post and can relate!! BEAUTIFUL rings, by the way!

Melissa said...

My husband and I both got really big rings, because we don't wear much other jewelry. Mine is 4 carats total and was custom-made, so I too always stare at my ring! It cost as much a car, so I would die if anything happened to it. We normally only wear them when we leave the house. Although my hubby forgets to wear his sometimes, but as much as we spent on it, I'd rather him forget to wear it than to loose it! Both my engagement and wedding rings have diamonds all the way around, so I fear loosing a diamond if I do housework with them on. Plus my fingers swell a little at night and my bands are really thick (to fit all that bling!) so I don't wear my ring to bed.

PS - love the new background and your rings!

Sara said...

We actually don't wear ours all the time. The jeweler where my ring was made sugegsted not wearing it while working out, showering, washing dishes, etc. Also, I don't sleep in it (neither does my husband). But we ALWAYS have them on in public or when we have people over. He knows I think it's strange when married men don't wear a wedding band. (Certain professions excluded, but hubby works in an office.) I did get some cute rubber gloves so I don't have to take my rings off when washing dishes. I was ALWAYS afraid it would fly out of my hands and into the sink.

AmberDenae said...

Aww, that is so sweet. I am SO glad that he didn't lose it!

Well, I'm not married BUT I do have a purity/promise ring that my Dad bought me when I turned 16. I NEVER take it off, ever, ever, ever. So, I know that when I do get married, it will be the same thing. I hate the thought of parting with my purity ring though!

I've only been engaged for a few weeks now---but I know to not take my ring off. It's fully insured, but I know if I took it off, I'd lose it.

We wear ours all the time. I take mine off to shower and clean though.

Jules said...

I love this post. I only take mine off for tough cleaning and showers. Hubby never takes his off.

Lauren said...

We wear ours all the time--the first week we were home from the honeymoon Hubby took his off to shower & ended up going to work without it. I gave him such a horrible time about it (all in good love) that he doesn't take it off hardly ever. He's even started wearing his to play golf--which for him is a huge deal!

~The Neaves Nest~ said...

I wear mine all the time too. cooking, cleaning, work, sleep, yard work, painting...haha! The only time I have taken it off is to physically clean the ring or if we were going to be in the ocean. I'm affraid a wave or litte fishy would take it off...

My husband on the other hand has had several scares. it's a little irritating! he takes it off everytime he washes his hands!

AmyT said...

Yes I wear my ring ALL the time, never take it off. I feel bare without it. I LOVE my ring. My hubby wears his all the time as well.

Mrs. M said...

Sometimes I take it off to wash my hair, but then I always forget to put it back on. One day I went to work without it and I was so upset that I had left it at home. I called my husband and asked him to bring it to me. I felt naked without it!

Heather said...

I wear mine everyday, but I don't keep them on all the time. I don't normally take them off for cooking unless I am handling raw meat, or kneeding dough or something like that. I don't wear them in the shower because the shampoo and conditioner will make them slide right off! I don't sleep in them because my fingers swell! And I take them off when cleaning because I don't like wearing those rubber gloves! Gosh that makes it sound like I hardely wear them, but I do!! :)

My husband wears his mostly on the weekends. He doesn't wear it to work because he crawls under houses and works with chemicals.

I have a special (small) box I keep my rings in, so they aren't just laying around.

Jessica said...

I wear my ring all the time because if I don't, I know I'll lose it too! Plus I just love it, and what it symbolizes. So I just never take it off

Mine always stays on, but my DH has the kind of job where you can't wear jewlery, watches, etc. Heavy equipment/mechanics. Otherwise he always wears it! :D

katie + bret said...

Wow - A LOT of people read and post on your blog! I am amazed!

Bret and I do not wear our rings all the time. During the day yes and when we go out yes, but once I get home I take all my jewlery off. Bret and I are both Aggies so we have Aggie rings on our right hands as well and that ring is SO heavy that by the end of the day, both rings feel like they way a ton. Saturdays normally though if we are just around the house I will put my wedding ring on only just because I love to look at it :) When we got married I remember telling Bret he didn't have to have a ring if he didn't want one. I know a lot of men who don't wear rings and it honestly wouldn't have bothered me. But, being the great man he is, he wanted a ring! **Gorgeous rings!**

Megan said...

I loved what you said about your ring being your special because he picked it out and gave it to you, sometimes we get caught up in the 'size' of the ring etc. But its the meaning that is important!
I take mine off to sleep and then put it on in the morning after I get out of the shower. I never really wore rings before I got married so I had no idea my fingers swell really really bad when its hot, so sometimes if is it too hot they won't come off and I have to sleep and shower in them, but thats not my first choice.

Anonymous said...

I never take mine off. I know people who take theirs off just because. I can't imagine doing that....I love my ring and love it on my finger!

Sassy Engineer said...

I love ring pictures - too cute! I have to say I was surprised at how many people keep it on ALL the time. I love my ring and looking at it, but I don't wear it in the shower, sleeping, doing dishes, cooking, or work around the house (gardening, painting, etc.) Someone mentioned theirs being white gold, and mine is the same way. It will stay white longer, and I have heard that soaps are bad for it. Also, I'm afraid of it getting damaged when I'm doing something around the house (painting or building or digging and such). I also don't want to scratch myself while sleeping. My diamond is that big, but it kind of sticks out, and I tend to lay on my hands a lot.

We always wear them the rest of the time and definitely during the day and weekends! What a good question!

I have never taken my wedding band off in 10 years and my engagement ring I wear too and have only taken off to have the stone reset. I love both and I call them "when we were poor rings" LOL

Mrs. McB said...

We wear ours all the time. Mr. McB does take his ring off when working extra hard at something. However, he has a box he keeps things in on our dresser. If off, that is where the ring goes. I truly never take mine off unless it could get really messed up. Like you, I love my rings and cherish them.
Everyone said get a really small diamond and then upgrade when you have extra money. Nope, not me, I wanted what we could afford but I wanted it to be something I loved because I never want another. :)

Girl Meets Beau said...

Yes, I love my ring and wear it all the time! I take it off to work out and shower though b/c I always fear that I might lose it down the drain. I wear mine as much as possible. When I am working in the kitchen though I have to take it off some. But Hubby drives me crazy. He takes his off everynight and during the day occasionally to "play with it" which really means "to drop and then scramble trying to find it."

And I did have to take them off for the last month of being pregnant! SWOLLEN!

- Sarah :-) said...

Well, I wear it ALL the time, EXCEPT for really dirty dishes with ots of gunk, and int he shower... but I have a good excuse!!

Not long after Mcstudly proposed to me with the ring... (okay, like 7 months later) the diamond got SO loose I could hear it wiggling!! And it was from Jared's ("He went to Jareds!") so it wasn't cheap. So I took that sucker back and had them fix it, but I was (still am) SO paranoid about the diamond falling out and down the sink or into the drain that I refuse to wear it around lare amounts of water, or places that it would be lost forever the second it falls off. But I wear it ALLL the time other than that. Am I a bad person?

FYI - when I do take it off, in the kitchen or in the bedroom, I have a special place that I ALWAYS put it. There's not "quick" placement with this chick... it goes INTO the ring bowl, or into the jewelry box where it has it's own little spot. No chances of losing that sucker - NOOOO way!

I completely agree! I never take mine off! However, I make the hubs take his off when he goes to work sometimes. he's an engineer and he climes in mud and stuff and he was shaking the mud off of his hands one day and his ring flew off! He did find it thought -- thank GOD! My sister has (had) a friend that would never wear her ring to dinner or happy hour. My sister thought she was shady and quit going out with her...

I guess I'm kinda the odd man out on this one...we don't wear our all the time. BUT not because we don't want to - I'm scared to wear mine when I'm at the hospital...because...well...I'm kinda scared I would get it caught on something or get somekind of horrible bodily fluid spilled on it (yeah, sorry to go there - gross, I know). And Kevin can't wear his when he flies...somekind of Navy rule. But other than that they are always on.

Great question!!

P.S. LOVE the new blog background!!

I am so careful with my engagement ring. I lost a charm from a Tiffany's necklace down the drain last summer and since then I am so afraid the same will happen to the ring. I never take it off near the sink. I put it back in its box at night too because I can't sleep with jewelry on!! I am constantly checking for it though and staring at it. I like the way it sparkles and what it symbolizes of course. I will probably be the same in a few months when I have the wedding band too. I'm sure Mike will misplace his quickly though.

I never understood those who don't wear their wedding rings. One of my close friends doesn't wear hers and I never got it... show it off!

I wear my ring all the time except when I sleep and shower. I have a jewelry box that I put it in during those moments. I used to sleep in it until I woke up one morning with diamond dent marks on my face! Apparently I slept on my hand the entire night and the marks on my face were there for almost the entire day.

My husband on the other hand wears his 24-7. He only takes it off like once a month to sleep to air out his finger I guess.

I wear my wedding band all the time. I never take it off. Even though it's white gold and I've heard soap and stuff is bad for it. I hardly ever wear my engagement ring. A friend of mine's diamond fell out at work (she broke a prong) and a dog ate it right up. I was horrified and will never wear mine to work again! Plus it's platinum so it's a softer metal and I'm pretty rambunctious.. I really only wear it out.

I'm a weird one. I think my engagement ring is overkill. And it's not even one of the ostentatious ones!! Oh well...

You know, Chris' hands swelled up on our honeymoon too! He hasn't had any problems since then.

I used to keep my ring on all the time, but then diamonds started falling out. Evidently, my setting is more delicate so the friction of wearing it in bed (against the sheets) causes the small diamonds to come loose and fall out.
So I take mine off before bed now. Or if I'm working around the house or outside.

But Chris has a Tungsten Carbide ring, never takes it off, and it still looks great because it doesn't scratch!

I once lost my engagement ring when I was tanning b/c I took it off and set it right outside the bed b/c I didn't want a tan line on my finger, even though my ring would normally cover it up. I forgot about it and left the tanning salon, and turned right around when I remembered it. Luckily, the staff were honest people and kept it and had it for me! I am so glad no one tried to take it and sell it!

I used to not want to dirty it, so I took it off to shower, work out, clean, etc. But then I got lazy and I wear it ALL the time.

I really only wear my diamond at work and when we are headed out. However, I wear my wedding band 24 hours per day. It is a part of me and almost the more important of the two for me. The wedding band doesn't have any sharp edges...is a perfect continuous never-ending circle. I can wear this when I am holding a newborn and not worry about injuring the baby!

My husband only wears his band when he leaves the house which is fine with me.
