February Book Review

The first book I read this month was The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware and it was one of the best books I've read in a long time. I cannot even remember the last time I read a book I couldn't put down so this was a treat. I was racing to the end to see how it ended. It was well written, a page turner, and a fun read. What more could you want? Highly recommend!

One of my self development books this month was The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. I read it six years ago so it was time for a refresher. It was good to dive deep into the habits again, especially on what it looks like to think win/win. It requires seeing the problem from the other point of view and really seek to understand. That is a tough habit, but I think it's one of the most rewarding. I also enjoy the chapter on renewal. It is so important to rest physically, mentally, socially/mentally, and spiritually. In our busy society this was a good reminder that rest is important in each of these areas. This is a great book with so much insight that I would recommend it to anyone.

I read Fat Girl Walking by Brittany Gibbons this month in a quest to find a body image positive book. I must admit I hated the first half of the book. It was a bit too TMI and her body hatred was sad and hard to read. But the second half of her book? Amazing. I loved reading about how she came to love and accept her body. She has been through a lot and came out of it all positive and advocating for change and that takes bravery and courage. The last chapter had me laughing out loud. So I might not recommend this book to you, but I would highly recommend you check out her TED talk.

Another self development book I read this month was Developing the Leader Within You by John Maxwell. If I love a quote or paragraph of a book I'll take a picture of it and save to my notes app in my phone. Well, I took about a million pictures of pages in this book. There were so many gems of information so I would recommend it to anyone. Here are a few of my favorite quotes:
"Success depends not merely on how well you do the things you enjoy, but how conscientiously you perform those duties you don't."
"Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are, to some extent, gifts. By contrast, good character is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece - by thought, choice, courage, and determination. This will only be accomplished with a disciplined lifestyle."
"Too often, we try to choose to control things we cannot. Too seldom, we chose to control what we can... our attitude."
"When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, all is lost."

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover was by far my favorite book of the month, maybe even of the year. I was captivated from the very first page and could not put it down. The writing was excellent and the character development was so impressive. I don't want to give anything away, but I highly recommend this one!

What have you read lately? Any recommendations?
