Wannabe

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a Southern Belle. I want the Southern accent. I want the warm weather all year round. I want the ocean near by. I want the year round tan. I want to try grits.
I think I would fit in perfectly. I've got the big hair, I adore country music, and I own a cowboy hat. And my fake Southern accent is pretty impressive. Yep, I'm a wannabe Southern girl.

You're precious! I must admit, I love the south. But, I'm also biased! :)

me too! I was just thinking about this the other night. I've ALWAYS wanted to move to the south since I was real little, I wanted to be RAISED in the south. Then I got to thinking, I wonder how many southern girls long to grow up in the midwest." Yeah, there probably aren't any.... hahah :)

My husband and I are moving to southern Florida in August, and even though Florida is the southern most state (well, besides Hawaii), I just don't feel like it's "Southern". Not like Georgia, or South Carolina, or Louisiana, or, well, I could keep going but I think you get the point :)

Awww...I'm from Texas...which I fully consider kind of southern. Of course, a Texan accent is as appealing as a true southern accent. It comes off a little hick like to me. LOL

Ginger said...

I adore you and the south! I am an Okie I don't know if that qualifies me as southern or midwestern, but I like to think southern.

Sara said...

Well, as a native Texan (who often gets asked where I'm from) I would think you could incorporate y'all and coke into your vocab and you'd be halfway there. As for grits, they are to die for. mmmmmmm

Me too!..i like tp preten di really am one sinc i lived there for awhile though!! lol

I do love living in the south, too. I hate the cold, so Houston is perfect for me! The beach is about an hour away, but it's not so pretty (water is kind of brown) and is worse now after Hurricane Ike. But, oh how I LOVE wearing shorts and flip-flops most of the year. However, I'll give you my southern drawl any day. I hate my accent. I didn't even realize I had a drawl (in Texas it's specifically called a Texas Twang) until just recently. I called a customer service number that was located somewhere up north, and the guy said "Before you tell me, I'm going to guess you're from Texas." I said "Yes, how'd you know?" He said "You've got that drawl." Ugh.

THE Stephanie said...

HA! Just move!! You can do it! I'm sure you'd fit right in!

Melissa said...

Oh, ya, Sarah just reminded me what I left out: the best part is getting to say "y'all" :)

Tiffany said...

Me too! I lived in NC for a year and then came back up North when I started dating Mike. I almost have him convinced to move back there. . . maybe some day :)

Melissa said...

Oh and you get to drink SWEET tea. Can't forget the SWEET TEA!

Newlywed Hostess said...

You can be an honorary Southern Belle in my Book. And if you really want to be a Southern Belle the first thing you need to perfect is your "Well Bless their hearts" phrase. You can attach it to any not so polite comment and make it seem just so sweet.

Mrs. Dirnberger said...

ME TOO.....I have a blog post about this soon..how ironic

Tiffany said...

mmm.. sweet tea!!!

us southern girls would love to have ya...although i must admit, the weather down in atlanta wasn't exactly warm all year, so we definitely had our pasty pale winter months too ;-)

Cristina said...

LOL...I will join you, I wouldn't mind having a year round tan and living by the ocean instead of having 8 months of winter a year and living near a lake!

Jessica said...

This is so funny..I was telling my sister the exact same thing the other day. I said, "You know what? I think I should have grown up in the south. I would just fit in better there." How funny...glad to know someone else feels the same way :-)

I love the south!! I'm defnitely a southern girl, although I don't really have the accent to prove it. Other than that, I'm southern to a "T". I love me some grits and fish frys!

I think you would fit in GREAT down here! :)

And my south (Pensacola, FL) is Florida but more or less like lower Alabama because we are right on the state line. However, it is Florida and we have some REALLY country places near by and some really beautiful Vacation spots as well. I like to say I have the best of both worlds. You'd love it!

Mojito Maven said...

blame my colorado roots, but i like NOT being a southern belle but i can definitely see the appeal.

Tara Gibson said...

AWWW I will call ya a southern girl!

katie + bret said...

It can be fun!

Kelli said...

You are too funny! I love living in the south even though Texas is not actually considered a "southern state" I still love it. It's kind of like it's own little country.

I don't like grits though.. eww

Megan said...

The only downside is whenever you go somewhere else people are like, "you aren't from here are you?" I definitely still have a small country accent, and i'm trying to get rid of it!!

Meg said...

Being Southern is pretty awesome. I use to hate having a southern accent lol I didn't realize I even had an accent until I was 11 and met a girl from Minnesota. :P

I don't like grits and I'm not in to cowboy apparel but give me a porch swing, sweet tea, some country music and a 'bless your heart!' and I'll feel right at home! ;)

Unknown said...

coming from a Georgia girl I think you would fit right in down here. But right now I need to work on that tan! lol

Hailey HRH said...

southern girls are the best!

the higher the hair - the closer you are to GOD! that's just a texas thing though :)

Unknown said...

haha that cracks me up! :-) I am such a northerner (from Canada) but I do love the South now that I live in Georgia!

Lacey said...

Awww....you should totally move to the South! I feel very blessed to have grown up Southern...my family has been in Louisiana since the late 1700s-early 1800s, so you can always come down and I will teach you our ways :) I bet you would fit right in!

Casey (@ Chaos and Cardboard) said...

I'm Southern but somehow didn't end up with the accent. I want to sound like Paula Dean somethin' awful. I do say y'all, so at least I got something. Start saying y'all and coke, that will be a start.

Girl Meets Beau said...

You are hilarious! Gotta love the South. I live in Texas, which I don't feel is truly the "South" even though we have the music, accents, hats, etc. Now if I could live in Savannah, Georgia that would be the true South!

Come down and I'll fix you some grits and sweet tea! Mmmm!

E-Money said...

Um, me too! And I'm from California! As much as I love it here, I just think my life would be so much more interesting with a Southern accent...

Kelly said...

HAHAHA. I thought that for a while. Then I lived in a few places in the south and I've changed my mind a bit. I'm a loyal mid-western girl. I wouldn't mind living in some places in the south, just not anywhere anymore. I love North Carolina but Texas I don't like so much.

Girl you seriously are the cutest EVER!! I love this post!!!
Beware though...I'm a southern girl and I hate grits!!!
Too fun!

Amanda said...

When you say you want to TRY grits....does that mean you've never had them before?? OH MY GOODNESS! I'm in shock! I don't think I've ever known anyone who's never at least tried them before. Y'all need to plan a trip to Savannah! You'll get your fill of grits then! :)

Well, y'all just move on down here!

You are just too funny! I love being a southern girl :-) Born and raised in Louisiana, and I have no desire to move anywhere else!!! I'm gonna post a cute Southern Girl Poem on my page for you... go check it out! (PS-Grits Rock!!!)

I would love warm weather year round...and sweet tea...yeah, it would be fun.

Jules said...

So funny, because I think about this too. I hate the cold, would love to have a southern accent, be tan all year long and live near the beach.

I am so with you on this!

Unknown said...

Girl, you would fit right in!!! But you have to love sweet tea too. Sadly, I'm a Southerner that doesn't drink sweet tea (only unsweet) and you CANNOT imagine the looks I get when I order unsweet tea!

Kaitlyn said...

So glad I'm not the only one!

Ok, you are too cute! I'm completely southern but I think grits are awful!! Although, I think you would fit in with us southern ladies just fine!! ;)

Haha. I was born and raised in Nashville. I love my accent, but I always wished I was from Charleston, or some cute little town in Georgia. I feel like Tennessee and Alabama are the hick-ish states people make fun of, Georgia is the cutest southern state. :) I used to be really embarressed about being from Tennessee, but now I just got over it, I guess.

I work really close to the Nashville airport, so I see alot of travelers. I love it when people tell me how cute I talk. :)

On a side note, I hate sweet tea. I really do wish I could learn to like it. Its what I'm supposed to like. :)

The Blonde Duck said...

Do you love bbq and pie? Those are Southeren requirements.

Mrs. McB said...

Haha! I understand...I'm the same. Where I'm from is considered Southern, so I can fake it. :)

Aww - I'm a southern girl witout the south!! My family is from the south. I was born in the south (sort-of). My earliest memories are from living in Baxley, Georgia (you have probably never heard of it. No one has. ha ha!). My accent flares up anytime I talk to either one of my aunts or my grandfather. And I LOVE southern cooking!!

McStudly thinks my accent is hot when it pops out, but I told him that if we move back, it'll be permanent! I think he's sold on the idea, now...

The Rest is Still Unwritten said...

Haha! I love you! You are so cute! I always wanted to be from the true south, which Texas is not. Texas is basically it's own country. Just admit it, you wanna be Texan! Hehe!

Tasha said...

You can always move South! We'll hang out! I thought Oklahoma was in "The South" until I moved to Alabama! I'm still working on not pronouncing my R's. I love it when people say "fu-ther" instead of "FAR-ther" and I suddenly want some sweet tea after reading this post!

Aliya said...

Me, too... I'm all about some Sweet Tea all year round! :)

I think you need to head South!

I love the South too! And cheese grits are the best :)

LOL. I wasn't southern by birth (half my life was in MO), but boy did I get here as fast as I could. I LOVE it down here. So, come on down and I'll save you a seat in the outdoor office. LOL. BTW- grits are REALLY good with garlic and Parmesan cheese and topped with fabulous crab cakes.

We are an hour from Charleston / the beach.

Rachel said...

LOL!!! You crack me up!

Another Texan here - and I also consider Texas to be "southern" - much more than say, "southwestern".

Okay, first of all - I don't like grits!!! Ick! Blech!! But I do like okra - fried, pickled, in gumbo.... yummy! Oh, and Chow-chow in my black-eyed peas!! Seriously good. Really.

Ha ha ha ha!!! This has been interesting to read all the comments!! You know, I never thought I had much of an accent, until I went to visit my friend in Cleveland a few years ago. And all the people at this party we were at kept asking me to say things.... like "Say 'water'". Evidently, I have more of an accent than I thought!

Rachel said...

Oh, but I do have to tell you that it does get kind of cold down here too!!! Maybe not like the far north, and we usually don't get much snow, but the cold wind will get you!
That, and after living here about 5 years, you'll come to think that anything under 50 degrees is cold too!

Unknown said...

Well hey! Thanks for the comment on my page:) You have a great blog! I had to laugh about this post so that is why I am commenting on it:p I grew up near Nashville, TN for a good part of my life and do have the accent so I guess that makes me a southern girl? lol...We moved there when I was ten but before that I was from PA...Gosh I can remember swearing that I would NEVER carry a southern accent:p I vowed that I would shoot myself the day I said Ya'll and Tomaters....But here I am saying them both, ha ha! I figured if ya can't beat em ya mid as well join em:) lol...
